Basic Course
[Mt. Hakodate Observatory]
This is an observatory which commands a sweeping view of the urban area of Hakodate and the surrounding sea and mountains. You can enjoy "the panorama from Mt. Hakodate" that appears as three stars, the highest rank, in Michelin Green Guide Japon.
[Cape Tachimachi]
A cape located at the southeastern end of Mt. Hakodate. You can get there after a 15-minute walk from the tram terminal. You will be impressed by the grand scenery of the steep cliffs surrounded by the sea. On clear days, you can see Aomori Prefecture across the Tsugaru Strait. Rugosa roses, the flower of Hokkaido, bloom beautifully here in summer.
[Goryokaku Park]
The Site of Goryokaku Fort, designated as a national special historic site, is a park blessed with nature. You can enjoy walking around through beautiful scenery in four seasons: Cherry blossoms in spring, green trees in summer, autumn leaves in fall and snow in winter. The observation floors of adjacent Goryokaku Tower command a sweeping view of the huge star-shaped fort.
[Trappistine Convent]
This is a Catholic convent. The existing church building was built in 1927, featuring the mix of the Gothic and Romanesque styles, such as the brick exterior and the semicircular-arched windows.

[Takadaya Kahei Statue]
Takadaya Kahei was titled a person who contributed to the development of Hakodate.
[Motomachi Roman Catholic Church]
This Catholic church was founded in 1877. The existing building was rebuilt in 1923. The magnificent altar in the cathedral was sent from the pope.
[Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward]
This is a notable historic building in Hakodate, designated as important cultural property. It has a magnificent main hall and rooms reserved for special guests. When members of the Imperial family visited Hakodate, they stayed and rested in the rooms.
[Koryu-ji Temple]
This is the oldest temple in Hakodate. The existing main building was built around 1900. Carvings of lions and dragons engraved on the gate are marvelous. This temple is recommended for those who are interested in Japanese architecture.
[Foreigners’ Cemetery]
This cemetery started when the bodies of two sailors were buried here in 1854, when the American Navy visited Hakodate. The plots are divided according to the nationalities or religions of the deceased.
